Cracker Thanksgiving: catfish, cheese grits

Did someone say seafood?

PORT ORANGE, FL -- We have been easing our way back into our lives as Floridians, after five months in Alaska. At times, we feel like aliens in a place where I've lived for 32 years and the Prince for half that.
Today we decided to visit one of our favorite eateries.
Since it was Thanksgiving day, the restaurants open in the Daytona Beach area boil down to the few and the crowded.
And so we arrived at Aunt Catfish's well before they opened the doors at 11:30 this morning, which gave me time to stalk the resident snowy egret (above) who was panhandling on the restaurant's dock.
Although we'd planned to order traditional turkey, we took a look at the menu and found we couldn't resist the fingerling catfish, something we haven't eaten since before we left for Alaska in April.
We expected maybe six catfish each. Instead we got about 15, which made me a little sorry I'd hit the unlimited salad bar and hot table so hard. In addition to lots of fresh veggies, I'd had two servings of cheese grits, plus baked beans, fried apples and cornbread before the main course arrived.
When we'd finished, we had greasy fingers and a satisfyingly tall pile of fish-skeletons.
We passed on dessert.
But our healthy dose of Florida Cracker fare helped make this place feel like home again.
