ORMOND BEACH, FL -- In Alaska and northern Canada, even in summer, 30-degree mornings are no big deal. You dress warmly and go about your business.
A 30-degree morning here, even in winter, is outside the norm, which must be why it's so uncomfortable. No amount of clothing is enough.
We've had our once-every-five-years major cold snap this week, with one morning in the 20s and another at about 30. The ferns in my yard are black, the firewood in my garage has been converted to ashes in my fireplace and I am struggling with a pathological fear of my next electric bill.
The weatherman says our low tonight will be 34, and tomorrow this will all be over, with highs in the 70s.
And maybe by Sunday, Prince Charming and I will be able to remember why we decided not to apply for those ski resort jobs in Colorado this winter.
