The fishTITUSVILLE, FL -- The first hints of fall this week lured us to the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge Saturday.
We didn't expect to see many birds with it barely October, and so we were not disappointed. We were surprised to see a lone feral cat lurking near a remote Mosquito Lagoon boat ramp, miles from the nearest residences or businesses. Surely this kitty has a story to tell, probably of being abandoned in this lonely outpost, and subsisting on small wildlife and fish scraps. However he or she wound up here, she wasn't talking, watching us warily from the underbrush.
Later, on the Blackpoint Wildlife Drive, one of the usual residents gave us the eye, using the greenery for cover just like the cat did.
Nearby, in a wide lagoon, the fish were flying in an acrobatic display like nothing we'd ever seen before. We spent perhaps half an hour trying to photograph the airborne, which requires reflexes faster than I've ever had.
I concluded the best strategy was to focus on one patch of water and wait for a fish to jump there. There was such a fish-circus going on that something was bound to happen in my frame, and finally, it did.
