Birds above, mud below

Wood stork

No wonder my feet felt heavy

DE LEON SPRINGS, FL -- Good thing the stork delivers babies, because he has a face only a mother could love.
Blessed with the graceful body of an ibis yet cursed with the leathery head of a vulture, the wood stork has often attracted my lens. Most of those photos have soon fallen victim to the delete key. I like the one above because it shows off the stork's finest features, while not completely hiding its worst one.
Our second visit to the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge Sunday provided the usual avian subjects on a chilly but clear morning. In addition to the high-fliers, we saw three super-sized alligators enjoying the sunshine, plus one smaller one who remained afloat.
Saturday's rain had left some parts of the trail quite sticky, so much so that our feet began to feel heavy with mud that attached itself firmly to our shoes and then attracted more mud until our feet looked as big as snowshoes.
We used sticks to scrape off as much as we could, but still managed to bring part of the trail home with us. I thought it would come off easily after it dried; instead, the stuff has filled in the lugs in the soles and hardened, cement-like.
Oh well, maybe it'll make my shoes last longer.
