Red-shouldered hawk
. . .and one who needs no introduction
Enough with the pictures already! ORMOND BEACH, FL -- Our hometown has a Central Park, not nearly as large or as crowded or as famous as the one in Manhattan, but interesting nevertheless.
We often walk through a part of the park, on a six-mile hike across town and back for breakfast.
Saturday on our way home, we spotted two hawks in plain sight. They were photogenic enough that we hurried straight home and drove back with our cameras.
One of the hawks was still around, observing a large grassy area from a power line. Woe be unto any small rodent wandering on this lawn.
Sunday morning we decided to try again, although the gray skies were discouraging. Our initiative was rewarded when we discovered this bald eagle, who posed for a while before setting off for parts unknown.
We wondered if this eagle is the same one who used to hang out in our neighborhood, before a couple of homeowners cut down the bird's favorite trees.
Eagles prefer dead trees, as the lack of foliage improves the view. But dead trees are also a hazard to the houses they might fall on in case of high winds, and so it is prudent to take them down.
