Loon parent feeds its offspring a tiny trout

Nearby, tiny trout feast on dragonfly

 JASPER NATIONAL PARK, AB -- At a small roadside lake, we stopped to photograph some loons, and got a good look at two stages of the food chain.
 Out in the lake, a pair of adult loons were catching tiny fish and feeding them to a pair of juvenile loons.
 Then, at our feet, we noticed hundreds of tiny fish feeding on a dragonfly that had landed on the water, possibly in pursuit of a mosquito.
 A local photographer who was also watching told us that the fish were not minnows, as we suggested, but juvenile trout.
