Caribou Mountain

CARCROSS, YT -- Now this was a hike!
We've found the hiking in Skagway frustrating, because all trails are heavily forested and therefore most views are hidden behind trees. On the other side of the mountains, there is less rainfall and more open space.
On June 18, we hiked up Caribou Mountain, an expedition recommended and led by a young woman who works at the Carcross tourist attraction we visit regularly with tour groups. The peak we reached was the one closest to the middle of the photograph. The village of Carcross and Lake Bennett are in the foreground.



Prince Charming loves it when I get him into situations where he has to make like a mountain goat. We lost track of the trail for a while and had to traverse a very steep and unstable slope before we found the more horizontal and well-worn route again. He threatened to turn back several times, but eventually he followed us and will surely boast on his blog about his bravery.



When we got a bit higher, the Prince was glad he had persevered. The small lake at the right is Emerald Lake, a popular tourist attraction oft photographed from the highway. The larger, longer lake is Spirit Lake, which is barely visible from the road which is the white line running through the middle of the picture.
