A particularly cooperative otter
An osprey, about to drop his lunch
TITUSVILLE, FL -- Our time in Florida suddenly feels short, and so we were drawn back to a favorite haunt on a perfect day Sunday.
In the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, an otter performed for us at length, untroubled by passing cars and jockeying camera buffs. Later, at Playalina Beach in the Canaveral National Seashore, we spotted an osprey perched atop a dead tree, holding his catch of the day between his feet and the branch. I'd been snapping away for a couple of minutes when the roar from a passing motorcycle spooked the bird. He took off, one-footing the fish. Just after this photo was made, he could hold on no longer.
In the course of the afternoon, we spotted at least three other ospreys hauling groceries. We hoped this one would find another fish soon.
