MERRITT ISLAND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, FL -- Since our hometown has begun its latest tourism binge, we fled south Sunday in search of quiet and birds.
It was a perfect day, and we gave the cameras some exercise.
We also contemplated how much we would miss the Wildlife Refuge if it should be closed, a possibility revealed last week. The refuge overlaps vast acreage of the Kennedy Space Center, and there's a plan afoot to build an additional launch pad in the northern section. That would end public access to a large chunk of the refuge.
The public, in meetings, blogs and letters to the editor, has reacted with outrage.
What a terrible loss this would be.
