YOSEMITE, CA -- Our hike last Tuesday took us to the top of North Dome, in the center of this picture.
For anyone with a helicopter, North Dome is probably less that two miles from the spot where I shot this photo. To get there and back, we traveled nearly 100 miles -- 90 by car and nine more on foot. We hiked downhill to get to the Dome, from a trailhead on Tioga Road.
It's possible to hike up to North Dome from the valley, where we live, but it's a 16-mile round trip, more than we want to attempt in one day.
The pointed rock to the right of North Dome is called Washington's Column. It looks great from down below, but if you're on top, it blocks much of the view of the valley.
