TIERRA VERDE, FL -- Winter in Florida means spring will be here shortly. And so bird's fancy turns to nest-building and chicks.
Wednesday morning Prince Charming and I watched for half an hour as a pair of great blue herons worked at home construction high up in a dead Australian pine. The bird on the left would search out a twig to break loose from the tree. Then he (?) would take it to his mate and she (?) would add it to just the right spot on the partially completed nest.
Sometimes the scavenger bird would find a twig that was in the same tree, and other times he would fly off to another tree and then fly back, carefully carrying his twig.
When we left, the scavenger bird had been gone for a while. On the way back to the car we spotted someone who looked just like him begging for a handout from a fisherman.
