ORMOND BEACH, FL -- Wednesday is early-quitting-time day for my afternoon job, so Prince Charming and I set out for De Leon Springs, where we often go to photograph birds.
Before we even got out of town, we found ourselves doing a U-turn to watch this family of sandhill cranes who were hanging out at a roadside retention pond. Unfortunately, the cautious parents began herding their youngster away from me as soon as I got out of the car. This was a fun sighting anyway. We've never seen sandhill cranes here in town before.
Over on the west side of the county, De Leon Springs State Park had turned lush and green since the last time we visited, about a month ago. There were more people, and more bugs, than birds.
In other words, summer is coming quickly, and it is time we should be getting out of here. A year ago this time, we were about a week from departing for California.
The past three years (actually four for me), we've picked the places we wanted to go, applied for jobs and got hired right away.
Not this time. Our first choice didn't have any openings, as was the case with at least one other potential employer. We did get job offers in Washington State, but the location was so hard to get to (and get out of) that we decided we'd rather stay home than be stuck there for five months.
We still have a couple of applications out there, and some hope that we will be able to leave town for the summer. If nothing comes along, we'll just stay home.
