Red-breasted merganser dancesORMOND BEACH, FL -- Prince Charming and I are just back from our Christmas camping trip to Fort De Soto, south of St. Petersburg. We like this campground for its location and its wildlife, and we've now spent four Christmases there.
This trip had its problems, starting before we left when both of us came down with coughing, sneezing, nose-blowing ailments. Then we spent our first two days camped next door to a group that included 10 children under the age of 12. This was not the sort of wildlife we were interested in, plus, the kids' noise-making insured that no birds would come near us.
This large extended family left on Christmas Eve morning and I spent a pleasant afternoon watching the water, where this lone merganser was good enough to perform for me.
Christmas Day, it rained. For the next three days, heavy overcast impaired all photographic opportunities, which were few anyway due to chilly temperatures and high winds.
Monday morning, when we were scheduled to leave, we woke up to dead calm and clear skies. We lingered for a while to enjoy it, which gave me a chance to snap these two pelicans over the Gulf.
The inevitable clouds rolled in and we headed back across the state. Naturally, the weather was perfect at home.
