Great black-backed gull dwarfs smaller cousinsMATANZAS INLET, FL -- A couple of weeks of freezing temperatures, and a bout of bronchitis, have slowed me down in the new year.
Saturday, tempted by blue skies, Prince Charming and I headed north with the cameras to see what we could see, which was not much. Although the weather looked perfect, a stiff breeze made it uncomfortable unless you were bundled up, and most of the birds seemed to have taken shelter somewhere out of sight.
We did spot this great black-backed gull towering over a group of smaller gulls and terns on a sandbar. My bird book says this fellow is the largest of the gulls, and not the friendliest. He hangs out with smaller birds in order to dominate them, and to eat their young.
