ZION NATIONAL PARK, UT -- With two days off, Prince Charming and I have escaped the North Rim for Zion, where we have scored another $8 campsite.
It's a rare cool June weekend here, but nothing like the North Rim, where I opened my drapes late Saturday afternoon to discover a blizzard in progress.
There was no accumulation where we live, but driving north Sunday morning we did encounter snow, on the roadsides and on the pavement. Note the pale green trees on the right side of the road, aspens trying to do their spring thing in spite of Mother Nature's cold shoulder.
At a less snowy point along the road, these three mule deer were willing to pose for me. Sometimes on the 45-miles between the North Rim and Jacob Lake, we see hundreds of deer. Wise drivers do not attempt this trip after dark.
