ESTES PARK, CO -- Between here and the park entrance Tuesday morning, we came across several photographers near the base of a large ponderose pine.
Naturally we stopped to see what they were up to. They were staking out a great horned owl's nest, with a mother and two chicks. Mom persisted in keeping her head behind a cluster of pine needles, but one of the chicks was curious enough to stare right at us several times.
We've never had a chance to photograph an owl in the wild, so this was quite a treat.
Later, at a roadside pullout in the park, we encountered the usual marmots who frolic in rocky areas. Making pictures of marmots is not at all difficult, as they are natural hams. Many of them, sadly, have learned to think of humans as food sources. Even if they aren't willfully fed, the crumbs that people inevitably drop attract marmots to walkways, particularly near garbage cans, where this one was licking tiny bits of something off the pavement.
