Cattle on the cliff?

 WESTPORT, CA -- Tuesday we traveled in snow at nearly 10,000 feet in Yosemite National Park, and later camped in a dense fog at sea level in Bodega Bay.
 Wednesday we drove north on California 1, a road without an inch of level or straight pavement.  It took most of the day to travel a bit more than 100 miles.
 After the foggy morning, things cleared up and we got to see California at its best, including the Point Arena lighthouse.
 Curiosity of the day was a short stretch on the road that was marked as open range and protected by cattle guards.  But how could cattle ever get to this road, without a traumatic gravity-induced event?  The road was on a ledge, with a sheer rock wall on one side, and a sheer drop-off to the ocean on the other.
 While walking (carefully) along the edge of the road, however, we did see solid and dried evidence that cows had indeed been here.
