ORICK, CA -- Tuesday morning was foggy in Bodega Bay, not particularly good for photography. But it was good to see our first seal of the trip, all by himself,
dozing on a rock below Bodega Head.
It's always amazing that any animal can sleep on the geological equivalent of a bed of nails. The blubber that keeps this fellow warm in frigid water, also provides very good cushioning.
Thursday we had better luck, as the Humboldt County elk herd was out in force around Orick. These three fellows rested companionably on the lawn of a lodge.
In three months, their antlers will be three times as big and they'll fight each other to compete for females.
