Copyright 2006 Lydia HinshawWHITEHORSE, YT -- Here in the Yukon, everyone is trying to soak up as much as possible of the final days of an all-too-brief summer. Fall colors are already much in evidence along the roadsides, and it's noticeably cooler in the early mornings.
Last weekend we attended the Klondike Harvest Fair and Storytelling Festival here. Prince Charming enjoyed some of the storytelling, but I liked the animals best, particularly these sweet-faced alpacas, raised for their wool by a family near Whitehorse.
The alpacas' patience was remarkable considering they were in a in a pen next door to an angry pacing llama. One look at the llama and passersby (including me!) decided to observe him from a safe distance.
We've become Whitehorse regulars the past four weekends, having discovered favorite spots like the fish ladder, the bookstore, the rec center, the Indian restaurant and the Bean North Coffee Roasting, shop 25 miles outside town, where we can sit in the garden and take advantage of the free Internet service.
Today, though, it's too cold to sit outside, another reminder that our jobs in Skagway, AK, will be over in just 26 more days.
