MERRITT ISLAND, FL -- Saturday was a day right out of a Jimmy Buffett song.
Prince Charming and I used it to visit the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge for the first time since we returned from Alaska five weeks ago.
We stopped as usual at the manatee deck on the north side of Haulover Canal. The last time we were there, I remember confessing to an out-of-state tourist that I had never, ever, seen a manatee in this location.
Well, Saturday there was a convention. At least six manatees, in a variety of sizes, rolled around and bumped into each other just a few feet in front of us. It was quite a show, and we were the whole audience.
On down the road, we took the seven-mile wildlife drive, saw the usual alligators and herons and egrets and ibises and storks, though not as many of them as we usually see. A juvenile bald eagle perched too far away for our longest lens.
My best picture of the day was of a couple of roseate spoonbills who were low and slow enough for me to get a decent shot.
Continuing our re-immersion into Florida, we drove farther south to Cocoa Beach to make sure Ron Jon is alive and well. And it was too nice a day not to have lunch outdoors, on the waterfront at Port Canaveral.
Not Margaritaville, but close enough.
