ORMOND BEACH, FL -- Shuttle launches are fun. We wait until the countdown is at about eight minutes and then we walk half a block to the corner and one more block to the Halifax River.
The park is full of cars, but there are so few parking spaces there that it isn't particularly crowded. We exchange greetings with neighbors we haven't seen in a while, despite living within sight of their homes.
The shuttle, whose launch pad is about 50 miles away, starts as a tiny blip moving up out of the lights of of Daytona Beach to our south. Then it seems to come toward us as it gains altitude. Eventually it fades to a tiny white dot and disappears over the ocean to our northeast.
Friday night, there were clouds to catch and spread the light.
This picture was shot with a 200mm lens and then blown up some more on my computer.
