ORMOND BEACH, FL -- We went to sleep Saturday night with plans for a trip to the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge early Sunday morning.
Fortunately, Prince Charming woke up in the wee hours to the realization that we could not go to Merritt Island because the whole area is closed down until we can get the space shuttle on its way. It's something we, as locals, should always remember to double-check before we head down that way, but we've been burned once already this winter.
The Prince's lucky late-night revelation saved us some wasted miles. We headed north up the beach instead, and went bird-hunting at Matanzas Inlet.
That's where we found this snowy egret darting about, grabbing whatever tiny tidbits of fresh (living) seafood he could find. (More photos on my Flickr account, link at right.)
We were home in plenty of time to walk a block down to the river to watch the shuttle launch, which went off on time at 7:43 p.m.
We can pencil in Merritt Island for next weekend.
