| Trying to get our clothes dry, again |
JASPER, AB -- This small town has been one of my favorite places since my first visit on a bicycle tour in 1991.
I've been back probably eight or nine times, and have always been sad to leave and eager to return. In the early 2000s, Prince Charming and I would spend a week or 10 days here each summer, and every day we'd go on a hike or bicycle ride to enjoy the stunning scenery. Never had Jasper let us down.
This week the stars lined up against us. We arrived Monday in a light rain. If all goes well, we will leave tomorrow (Friday,) most likely in a light rain.
We have spent most of our time in Jasper (a) in a laundromat trying to get clothes dry, (b) in the public library using the free wi-fi (c) huddled under a big, blue tarp at our campsite and (d) in a laundromat trying to get our clothes dry.
We have spent more in the laundromat than we have in the supermarket this week.
We did get to do a couple of favorite things. We soaked in Miette Hot Springs Wednesday. This is an experienced that is actually enhanced by cool raindrops. And we went on a hike at Mount Edith Cavell Thursday. This four-mile junket was conducted in relentless rain, and resulted in our fourth trip to the laundromat, to dry our rain-gear. It got wet again on the two-block walk back to the Magic Bus.
Oh well. It happens.
We had actually planned to leave here Thursday morning, but our 12X24-foot monster tarp was wet, and was going to be a bear to take down and pack. We were seeing some sunshine in the early morning, so we decided to stay another night. We hoped the tarp would get dry during the daytime (nothing gets dry at night, except at the laundromat) and we could take it down Thursday evening.
It was a good plan. But as soon as we paid for another night, the clouds moved in and an all-day rain commenced.
We will be packing up a much wetter tarp Thursday night, or Friday morning.
