WEST GLACIER, MT -- We have spent today packing the Magic Bus, hoping to be on the road early Tuesday morning, bound for Canada.
Our season ended a couple of weeks early, sadly for me. The jobs we had enjoyed the past two summers became something else again in 2013. We were required to work more hours than we had in 2011 and 2012. Our bosses told us this was because of budget cuts, and the need to serve increased numbers of visitors with fewer buses and drivers.
The extra miles on a difficult road left me exhausted and Prince Charming ill with shingles, a stress-triggered remnant of the chicken pox he had as a child.
Neither of us felt we could continue to drive passengers safely at this pace, so we decided to quit our jobs a week ago.
Since then, we've been taking it easy, trying to recover. The Prince's health is improving, slowly, and I'm feeling more rested. We are looking forward to hitting the road, seeing some old favorite places in the Canadian Rockies and some new sights to the west in British Columbia.
