ORMOND BEACH, FL -- We rolled into our driveway at lunchtime Sunday and 10 minutes later our house-sitter rolled up the road, headed to her winter gig in North Carolina.
In 48 hours, we've gone through all the mail (and thrown most of it away), unpacked and cleaned the Magic Bus, done lots of laundry (mostly cool weather stuff we won't need here anytime soon), reinstated our YMCA memberships (and hit the gym), visited the library and shopped for groceries.
We were gone from May 17 until Oct. 13, and we drove about 15,000 miles. We saw most of our old favorite places and several new ones.
The house seems empty as we are cat-free for the first time in decades. Our 17-year-old cat, Murphy, had to be put to sleep in July, a sad chore our house-sitter handled better than we could have.
Although we certainly miss having pets, they are a responsibility, an expense and, when we're away for five months every year, a worry.
Whether we will add a kitten to our household is something we will think carefully about in the coming weeks.
