DENALI NATIONAL PARK, AK -- It wasn't enough to show up well in a picture, but there was ice on the car roof early Friday. Saturday marked our third straight morning (and counting) of temperatures in the 30s.
The cold mornings have been cloudless and the days gorgeous. My passengers have seen Mount McKinley almost filling up a bright blue sky. The mountain hid behind clouds for almost the whole month of July, and I had begun to call our regular McKinley-viewing stop "Disappointment Overlook."
By mid-day these past three days, the temperatures have soared more than 40 degrees into the 70s, a heat-wave for caribou and grizzlies, and a bit much for tourists on un-air-conditioned buses too.
The northern lights were visible here early Friday morning, according to reliable reports from friends who were up between 2 and 3 a.m. Too bad Prince Charming and I aren't night owls.
