CHENA HOT SPRINGS, AK -- We have reached that point in the summer when we really need to get away from Denali on our weekends.
And so after our monthly fix of barbecue in Fairbanks Tuesday, we continued north for a soaking in Chena Hot Springs, which is pretty quiet this time of year, oddly enough. It's busier in winter, where folks come to stargaze, watch the northern lights, participate in various snow-sports, and of course enjoy soaking in 100+ degree water when it's well below zero outside.
We passed on the ice museum, where it's 20 degrees inside and you can order a drink in a martini "glass" that is made of ice. Don't need to be that cold, thank you.
But we loved the springs -- particularly the outdoor rock pool, which has its own cold water shower and a wonderful adults-only rule. The screaming kids have an indoor pool of their own that's virtually soundproof.
Also on the grounds was a goat with an interesting face. And when we headed out to breakfast early Wednesday morning, the first thing we saw was a cow-moose, knee deep in one of the several hot pools on the property.
