3 states, 2 time zones, 1 barbecue joint

The vibrant hub of Adrian, Texas

CLINTON, OK -- We were low on fuel for both the car and ourselves when we pulled off I-40 in Adrian, TX, Thursday at noon.
Adrian seemed to consist of a gas station, a grain elevator and a barbecue joint/antiques shop, facts confirmed by the young lady serving the barbecue, who told us the town's population is 140-some.
I spotted the restaurant too late and had to make a U-turn, which was no problem at all on a four-lane, traffic-free street.
Except for its lone employee, the place was deserted. It wasn't really noon, but 1 p.m., since we'd just left New Mexico and lost an hour.
There weren't many choices on the menu. The young lady told us she'd run out of all meat except beef. That was OK by us. Our last barbecue stop was in Fairbanks Sept. 12.
The food was great and the prices were better. A fine, filling lunch and iced tea for both of us came to $15.
Later on, in Oklahoma, we had dinner for $18 and bought gas for $2.69 per gallon.
Gas is a wild card -- you can never tell what it'll cost from one exit to the next -- but restaurant prices are dropping steadily as we head east.
One more nice thing about coming home.
