Progress elusive in cross-country trip

W-a-a-a-a-y down there is where we started this hike

Can we get to Ormond Beach on this trail?

SPRINGDALE, UT -- Tuesday's plan was to go into Zion National Park, hike for a couple of hours, and be on the road by lunch.
Instead, Prince Charming and I wound up doing an eight-mile hike with a 2,100 foot elevation gain. By the time we got back, five hours later, we were too hot and sweaty and tired to forge ahead into unfamiliar territory. So we drove right back to the motel we'd checked out of Tuesday morning and checked in again.
The gawk-caliber scenery here can easily blind us to all the reasons we need to keep moving south and east.
While neither of us has to get back to go to work, we also cannot be completely footloose. Our house-sitter has made plans to get on with his life. We are needed to serve meals and clean litter for two ungrateful cats who will not care whether we're back or not. We have missed them too.
Somewhere, on a dusty calendar, my October dental and doctor appointments are noted. There are any number of household chores that await us, and there's an election to vote in next week. I'm more than ready to live in a place larger than a hotel room for the first time in nearly six months.
Tuesday, though, Zion made me forget all that. And I wouldn't have had it any other way.
