OURAY, CO -- Friday morning we crossed Independence Pass, all of 12,095 feet above sea level.
There are no fall colors at 12,000 feet, because there are no trees. A few miles down, however, we drove back into tunnels of bright yellow.
We spent the day on steep, twisting Colorado roads, passing through mining and agricultural communities, national forests and ski resorts.
Ouray is a place I've often heard about and always wanted to see, a small village surrounded by tall mountains, some of which have fresh snow on top. One must be vigilant in looking for the snow, because overcast keeps moving in to hide the tops of the mountains completely.
We are hoping for better weather tomorrow, so that we can continue our scenery binge.
