A young osprey tries out its wingsLONG VALLEY JUNCTION, UT -- On our way back to the North Rim Monday, we spotted an osprey nest with at least five birds in residence.
Two of them probably the parents, lifted off when we stopped the car. The other three, who looked almost fully grown, waited and watched, sometimes flapping their wings hopefully.
Finally, one of them got brave, as two of his siblings watched. (The third bird's head is just visible under the perching bird's tail.)
The younger birds must learn to fly and fish, and they don't have much time left. In a couple of months, the lakes in these parts will freeze, and the ospreys need to have migrated south by then.
