Good news in Kanab MondayKANAB, UT -- The towns nearest to our North Rim home are Fredonia, AZ, and Kanab. Though they are in different states, they are only eight miles apart. Most everyone who lives in Fredonia, the smaller of the two, frequents Kanab's two supermarkets and two hardware stores for basic shopping, its Pizza Hut and McDonalds and Subway for fast-food fixes.
Folks in Kanab headed to Walmart in Hurricane, UT, or other big-city services in St. George, UT, travel through Fredonia to get there.
The communities rely on each other in certain law enforcement situations as well. And this is how a Kane County, UT, deputy sheriff, Brian Harris, was killed in foot pursuit of a burglary suspect in Fredonia last week.
The alleged perp, one Scott Curley, was well-known to law enforcement officers in two states even before this incident. After the shooting, he escaped into the desert and was the subject of a huge manhunt that lasted until the wee hours of Monday morning, when he was apprehended after a Kanab resident spotted him trying to break into a home there.
Curley was reputed to know the area well and to have had caches of necessities hidden in the stunning red buttes and mesas in the Kanab-Fredonia area. But he didn't last long as a fugitive.
Survival in these parts is dicey this time of year. Daytime temperatures are typically above 100 degrees. Shade is scarce and water is scarcer.
Prince Charming and I spent our weekend at Bryce Canyon. On our way north through Kanab Sunday morning, we saw a large message board warning motorists not to pick up strangers along the road.
On the way back Monday, the signs had been changed to let everyone know Curley had been captured.
Flags all over two counties in two states are at half staff in honor of Harris.
