DIXIE NATIONAL FOREST, UT -- The Steller's jay is supposedly a close relative of the blue jays we have back East. He's about as common as his cousin, but not nearly as aggressive.
In fact, the birds are downright skittish, and usually dart around so as to defy any attempts at photography. This one happened to be fairly cooperative, and posed for me in the morning sunlight.
In Arizona and Utah, the season has started to change. The parking lot at the North Rim, filled to overflowing just days ago, now has plenty of spaces. The campground where we spend weekends empties out on Sunday nights. Family vacations are over, because children have returned to school.
The osprey nest where we watched a family learning to fly two weeks ago is now empty, its inhabitants likely headed for Mexico. Only a few hummingbirds hover around the campground host's feeder.
It won't be long before the aspens turn neon.
