We finished the trip with two $5 campgrounds, in the Bitter Root National Forest south of Missoula, and in the Lolo National Forest east of St. Regis. For $5, you get a spacious campsite, a picnic table, a fire ring and an outhouse close by. You do not get to take a shower, so that was the first order of business when we got "home."
Wednesday night's campsite was on a low bluff overlooking the Clark Fork River, where we relaxed in the afternoon with our beach chairs and our Kindles.
In a bush nearby I spotted a bird nest with three youngsters. Before long, a robin showed up with something to eat. I watched them the rest of the afternoon.
Other parts of the trip weren't so interesting. We lucked into a brief period of sunshine while we were grocery shopping in Missoula, and took the opportunity to spread out the tent and finally get it dry.
