| Rabbit in a community of dogs
TUCSON, AZ -- We have just over a week left in our house-sit here, and are storing up memories of our month-long visit.
The backyard birds have been a continual source of entertainment. The Gambel's quail is particularly photogenic with his topknot. This one is the daddy of seven youngsters who often come into the yard with their parents to peck away at the birdseed that spills out of the hanging feeder.
In the sandy areas known as washes, we often see rabbits in the early morning. Cooper, the Cairn terrier we're caring for, didn't seem to notice the bunnies for a couple of weeks, but now he spots them every day and goes on alert. Usually they freeze in place, hoping it will make them invisible, and he freezes in place to watch.
If one of them panics and runs, Cooper will give chase, until he unreels his whole leash, which brings him to a frustrated halt.
The washes, which are located between rows of houses, are here to handle the water when there's heavy rain. The rainy season, known here as the monsoon, officially began June 15, but we haven't seen any rain since then, and likely won't before we leave. That's fine with us.
