LAKE LOUISE, AB -- Winters, you can ride in a horse-drawn sleigh on this lake. You can skate or ski or snow-shoe. You can drive your mega-SUV round and round, if you can get past security.
Come late-April, though, Lake Louise is starting to melt in spots around her edges, and possibly in other places too. Management puts up signs, which seem to produce the opposite effect of what was intended.
It was the rare tourist Tuesday who could resist the temptation to climb over the snowbank, past the signs and onto the lake. Some walked so far out they were barely visible from shore.
After observing all this for a while, Prince Charming and I had to try out the ice ourselves. It felt as solid as the sidewalks in our neighborhood.
All the same, we didn't go far, and we didn't stay long.
