JASPER, AB -- For two days we'd seen only a couple of cow elk around town. This time of year, elk don't hang out in large co-ed groups, and apparently the boys aren't allowed in the townsite.
But as we headed out of Jasper early this morning, we saw more than a dozen elk over a stretch of several miles along the Yellowhead Highway. Many of them were solitary bulls, with the stubby little spring antlers that will grow magnificently in time for the mating season (the rut), in September.
This fellow was trying to scratch an itch somewhere. The position he'd contorted himself into reminded me of the exercise classes I'm missing back home.
We are on the Alaska Highway in British Columbia now. The next few days, we'll be more likely to see caribou and moose, if last year is any indication.
