WHITEHORSE, YT -- As we pack up each morning to being another long day on the road, we can't help but ask ourselves one question:
Why didn't we take the damn ferry?
Once out on the road, however, there is plenty to see. The past two days we've seen caribou, moose, stone sheep, white-tail deer, buffalo and a fox. At least Prince Charming says he saw a fox. I didn't see that one myself, so we'll all have to take his word for it. I've promised not to mention that last year one of the "moose" he spotted was actually a horse.
Anyhow, it's been a long day and so all you'll get from me tonight is a double-serving of caribou, since they tend to hang out near the roads in the spring before moving off into higher country for the summer.
They spook more easily than deer or elk or moose, and often run for the woods when a car approaches, but the one above stopped and stared right at the camera for me.

Whose road is it anyway?The animals in this photo were licking at something, probably salt, at the edge of the pavement when a couple of big trucks happened by. Just after this photo was snapped, they ran off to the left, paused briefly and returned to the edge of the road. Almost instantly, yet another heavy truck was bearing down on them.
It's no wonder we've seen so many dead caribou beside the road.
