SEWARD, AK -- These three sea lions consented to line up for this picture after only half an hour of random swimming, diving, eating and repeatedly wandering into areas where they were too backlit to photograph.
It's really tough to get cooperation out of wild animals sometimes.
This lot hangs out near the waterfront here, and are probably the same ones who were in the same area Thursday, the day we arrived. That afternoon, five of or six of them were relaxing in the shallows, flopping around and occasionally waving a flipper in the air.
While I stood there watching, two little old ladies in birdwatching gear hurried up. They'd been alarmed by a waving flipper that looked to them like a distress signal.
"Are those animals all right? Do they need help?'' one of the ladies asked me.
I told her the sea lions looked normal to me.
This particular variety of sea lion is named for one George Wilhelm Steller, a German naturalist who visited North America with a Russian expedition in 1741. Several species he observed and wrote about now bear his name.
