YOSEMITE, CA -- Prince Charming and I had only one day off together this week, plus errands to run in Sonora (groceries, prescriptions, haircuts.) So we spent Tuesday taking care of business.
We also had time for a side trip to Sonora Pass, a 60-plus mile drive from Sonora up into the High Sierra. Like Tioga Pass, which is inside Yosemite National Park, Sonora Pass is simply closed down in the winter. No sense in even trying to keep it clear of snow and ice.
The last part of the drive was particularly steep and winding, but we were rewarded with wonderful views from the top. There's a hike that was tempting, but there just wasn't time on this one-day weekend.
The photo above was taken on the way back down, from just above a particularly tortuous switchback. A pickup truck happened along to provide a visual aid.
We crept down the hill with our standard transmission in second gear, and still had to use the brakes more than we wanted to.
By the time we got back to Yosemite Valley, we'd driven well over 300 miles. We also had a good barbecue lunch in a little mountain town.
It wasn't as exciting as the past four weekends of hiking, but my feet are thanking me for the rest.
