The Cabot Trail skirts the Gulf of St. Lawrence

INDIAN BROOK, NS -- The Cabot Trail, which is actually a road, follows the coast around the Cape Breton Island, in northernmost Nova Scotia.
We'd heard it was a spectacular drive, and we were not disappointed. Its sweeping vistas of mountains and sea are reminiscent of the Pacific Coast Highway in the Carmel-Big Sur region of California.
The entire trip is about 200 miles long. We hadn't planned to do all of it Thursday, but the campgrounds just didn't appear when we wanted them to. So we wound up driving farther than we wanted and finishing most of our clockwise circuit.
We broke up the day in the van with a mid-day hike on the Skyline Trail, which leads to a fantastic viewpoint looking down sheer cliffs to the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Along the trail, fellow hikers alerted us to the presence of some moose just off the trail near an outhouse, so we went moose hunting and spotted two, both taking it easy in the shade on what had turned into an unusually warm day.
This lady didn't seem to mind being photographed, as long as she was safe behind her tree.
Finally we found a campsite with an Atlantic Ocean view, plus the use of a lodge with electricity and wi-fi!
