FREEPORT, ME -- We've been on the road for a week in our VW pop-top, and so far the trip has been most memorable for bad weather.
The sun has not appeared since Monday. Driving through the Green and White Mountains, we were in thick fog everywhere there should have been a view.
Thursday we found this wonderful campsite on the water near Freeport, ME. It's still very early in the season here, kids are still in school, and there were no other campers anywhere nearby. We had a find dinner by the fire and planned on a nice breakfast there too.
But sometime during the night the rain started again. When we woke up, several rivulets of water were cutting gullies under the van. How happy we were not to be in a tent! How nice to be able to pack everything and leave without getting out of the vehicle.
Now we're in a coffee shop in Freeport, where the weather report promises 100 percent chance that this will continue all day!
Freeport is a formerly quaint New England coastal town trying mightily to turn itself into one more freeway outlet mall, centered around the ever-expanding LL Bean store.
We did the shopping thing Thursday, and escaped with just two pairs of socks that were on sale.
Thursday's other highlight was a lobster and steamers lunch at Harraseeket, a small dockside restaurant that is a local institution. I can't tell that it's changed at all since my first visit here in 1986.
When we can face the weather again, we will head north.
