SHELTER COVE, CA -- My favorite campsite of the trip so far overlooked the Pacific. Only four sites were occupied in a campground of 100 or more.
We could hear waves crashing and seals barking. The lighthouse, though not a functioning navigational aid, was lit at night. The metal structure was moved here, piece by piece, from a more remote location 35 miles north, at Cape Mendocino. It was reassembled and is preserved as a historic symbol, the centerpiece of a public park overlooking the sea.
It was a place I would like to have stayed longer, but more wild coasts beckoned.
