Whale Rock, just escaping the fog bank
Our campsite at Cape Blanco State ParkFLORENCE, OR -- In California, the morning fog burned off by lunchtime.
In Oregon, the morning fog lasts all day and all night.
We traveled the Oregon Coast about this time of year in 2006, headed home from our summer in Skagway, AK. We got good weather on that trip, and the coastal views were spectacular. We've always wanted to do it again.
The past two days, we haven't been so lucky. Thursday we got about five minutes of sunshine, which happened to occur while we were stopped at a viewpoint overlooking Whale Rock. Later, we passed viewpoint after viewpoint where only the dim outlines of rocks and pale lines of surf were visible through the white mist.
Oregon has wonderful state parks along the coast, and we spent the night at Cape Blanco. Friday morning we awoke to more fog and everything dripping wet. The photo shows special effects produced by the flash bouncing off many tiny droplets of water.
Friday afternoon we gave up and checked into a motel for expanded entertainment possibilities -- wi-fi and television. Maybe tomorrow we will get our scenery back.
