Old Faithful performs for a grateful audience
The frozen Madison River, outside the park
WEST YELLOWSTONE, MT -- We are 2,500 miles or so from home, but we bumped into some wildlife we knew on our day off Sunday. These ospreys were watching the skies near their nest along the Madison River just north of here. They were less skittish than the ospreys back home, allowing me to tramp noisily around in the woods below them to get to a point where the angle of the light was better.
I don't envy these two having to plunge into the waters around here to acquire meals for themselves and the family they will have this summer. But things will get better in the fall when they and their fledglings set out for their winter home in Central America.
Back in the park, we walked out to Old Faithful after dinner and our timing was perfect. We had to wait less that 10 minutes for a performance.
Earlier in the day, during an exploratory junket into Montana and Idaho, we found the Madison River is still frozen for long stretches below Hebgen Lake in Montana.
