These bison pedestrians have learned to walk on the left
OLD FAITHFUL, WY -- Saturday was our day off, and we woke up to a living Christmas card. An inch or two of powder had fallen overnight, covering walkways and parking lots that had been bare since we arrived nearly three weeks ago.
This threw a bit of a blanket on our plans to drive to Bozeman, MT, for some shopping. We checked the Internet and also with one of the park information desks and were assured that it would be no problem getting to Bozeman and back. Not so for people who'd planned to visit the Grand Tetons and Jackson, WY. The southbound road out of here was closed.
So we cleared about four inches of snow off the windshield and hood of the Magic Bus and set out about 9 a.m. Within eight miles, we were out of the snow belt and had clear sailing the rest of the way.
There was, of course, a point where we came around a curve to find the road clogged with bison and cars trying to navigate through the herd. The Prince had to brake quite smartly and when he did, the four-inch-thick snowpack on the van's roof kept moving forward. This was disconcerting, as this thick sheet of snow slid down the windshield and left us momentarily blind t before it broke up and fell the rest of the way to the road.
Having survived that little episode, we were able to get pictures of bison who plodded cooperatively to our left.
We had a barbecue lunch in Bozeman, and did some shopping, leaving for home around 3 p.m. and passing through several minor snowstorms on the way back.
It was a fun day for us, since we don't see snow that often. But our co-workers who've been working here all winter are getting really tired of snow.
