Dreading the weekends

 ANACORTES, WA -- The past few weeks have been an almost ritualized junket, up the coast from Bodega Bay, CA, to Anacortes.  Been there, blogged that, multiple times.

 The thing that's different about this trip is that it's in July, when the maximum number of kids are out of school and the maximum number of families are scheduling vacations and weekend camping trips.  Our previous trips through here have been later in the year, usually in September.

 Sundays through Thursdays this month, we've had no problem getting campsites at California, Washington and Oregon public campgrounds, and we have yet to find a bad one.  But Fridays and Saturdays are dicey, as the campgrounds fill up with folks who made their reservations months in advance.

 Two weekends ago we were lucky to get a site in a Forest Service campground near Crescent City, CA, and we stayed two nights to wait out the weekend.  A week ago we had to settle for an expensive motel in Rockaway Beach, OR, after passing "campground full" signs at close to a dozen spots.  The next day we grabbed the last spot at a commercial campground we like in Bay Center, WA. 

 Today, Friday again, we had to leave our nice campsite at Deception Pass State Park just south of here, because the place is booked for the weekend.  We found an expensive motel room for tonight, and a cheaper one for Saturday night.  It's been raining most of the day today, so being indoors isn't all bad.  Sunday, we'll be able to get back into a state park again.

 Next Friday, our worries will be over temporarily, as we're starting a two-week house-sit with two cats in a home near Bremerton. We'll have all the comforts of home while the homeowners and their daughter are flying to Orlando for two weeks.

 By the time the house-sit is done, it will be mid-August, and not too long before the school-buses roll.
