| The camperdown elm
FRIDAY HARBOR, WA -- We hadn't taken the ferry ride to San Juan Island in three years, so it was time.
On every visit here, the one thing I must see is the elm tree that has been pruned to fit like a helmet over the front yard of a small business. On my first visit here, in 1991, it was a restaurant, with outdoor seating under the tree.
Now it's a shop that sells garden ornaments. In fact, the tree has to be more striking than any ornament available for sale inside.
Priceless.
