MOAB, UT -- During our seven-miles-plus hike Saturday, we could always be sure of one thing. When we arrived at some towering formation noted on our trail map, we would look up and see two young men, way higher that we were willing to try to go.
They were 20-somethings, nice guys. One of them took a picture of us together early in the hike. We didn't really talk to them much after that, for obvious reasons.
We have grown accustomed to being some of the oldest folks on some of the trails we hike. I suppose that's better than the alternative.
On our way back to the car Saturday, an outbound hiker in his 50s looked at Prince Charming and said to his wife: "That guy made it, so we can make it too."
We had to make some adventurous climbs and descents to complete the trail, and not far from the end wound up wading through a thigh-deep puddle.
It was that or climb 20 feet up a near vertical wall and then make a slightly easier descent of the other side of the rock.
We elected to take the water route. Only one of us forgot to empty our pockets first. I had been wanting a new cell phone anyway.
