STEVENSVILLE, MT -- Friday morning we took a drive through the Lee Metcalf Wildlife Refuge near her. Just as we passed the entrance, these two whitetail deer hurried out of a meadow into deeper underbrush, and then stopped to stare at us before vanishing into the woods in the background.
The only other wildlife we spotted in the refuge were a great blue heron, and assorted smaller birds.
So we headed on up the Bitterroot toward Missoula, where a sunny day turned into rain that would plague us off and on for the next three days, and counting.
